It will be the largest new heavy timber structure in North America

Work has begun on the tech complex that will replace Red Hook’s Revere Sugar Factory. Developer Thor Equities announced this morning that construction has kicked off on the 7.7-acre waterfront office campus designed by Foster + Partners. The announcement also comes with a new rendering of the dual-building complex, which will together comprise the largest new heavy timber structure—that’s rights, timber!—in North America.

The buildings at 280 Richards Street will give way to 795,000 square feet of office space for creative industries, and will include 23,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space. Leasing is now under way at the site.

Thor Equities purchased the waterfront site for $40 million in 2005, back in the wild west days of Red Hook that predate even Ikea. And to some extent it’s still those days, owing majorly to the area’s distance from the nearest subway. But Red Hoek Point, as the office complex was dubbed back in August, has taken that in to account and will offer shuttle service to and from nearby subway hubs.
