The new Arlo Hotels brand features rooms that are small on space, but big on style
Capsule hotels are nothing new in New York City, but they’re not exactly known for being luxurious—after all, how much in the way of amenities can you pack into less than 200 square feet of space?
But one hotel brand is hoping to change that: developer Quadrum Global (which has several residential holdings throughout Manhattan) recently launched Arlo Hotels, with two lodgings planned for New York thus far.The first to launch, in Hudson Square, features more than 300 rooms that all have one thing in common: none measure more than 200 square feet.
They’re available in a variety of configurations—queen, king, and even a room with two twin beds and a terrace—and maximize the tiny spaces with flip-down desks, shower stalls, and cleverly-designed storage solutions.
The hotel’s founders are operating under a similar notion as those of co-living spaces like Common or WeLive: That guests will spend less time in their rooms, and more time utilizing the well-designed, thoughtfully curated common spaces. From a press release:
Each Arlo Hotel boasts a multitude of joyful, inclusive public spaces built to accommodate a variety of environments and needs with a flurry of activities throughout the day. Guests can socialize and relax, listen to music, play board games, work and meet, or dine and drink in the common spaces, all while connecting and interacting with other guests.
The developers also claim to the “first micro hotel in the United States with four-star design,” with AvroKO (the brand behind the 1 Hotel Central Park, along with Gotham West Market and tons of other restaurants) designing the interiors and common spaces.
Still, there’s no getting around the fact that the rooms are small—minuscule, in fact. And the prices are also pretty high, considering the spaces: Rates listed on Arlo Hudson Square’s website start at $369 per night, and go up to nearly $500. (Yes, you read that right.)
